BiPAP Machines

Serving the greater Raleigh area

Over 20,000 million people in America have been diagnosed with sleep apnea. That the number is probably much higher because some symptoms may be hard to detect unless someone else is present.

Some of these people use CPAP machines. Others use BiPAP machines or other variations of CPAP. What’s the difference between CPAP and BiPAP in particular? We’ll tell you why BiPAP may be the best option to treat your sleep apnea.

If you think you need a BiPAP machine because you have a sleep breathing problem, like sleep apnea or COPD, contact us at 919-462-8081 for an in-person or Telehealth appointment.

What Does A BiPAP Machine Do?

A BiPAP machine is one of the types of ‘PAP machines.’ PAP means positive airway pressure, providing the user with continuous air to stop sleep apnea events where the user stops breathing. By using BiPAP or another PAP device, people can have good sleep with no sleep apnea symptoms.

How Does A BiPAP Machine Work?

BiPAP uses two positive airway pressure levels to stop sleep apnea events. The two air pressures alternate as the user inhales and exhales. On inhalation, the air pressure increases. During the exhale, the air pressure decreases. The pressure difference is better for someone with obstructive sleep apnea. It can also be easier to tolerate and get used to than CPAP.

Who Should Use BiPAP instead of CPAP?

CPAP machines are generally initially recommended as a treatment for the most basic form of sleep apnea. It provides one continuous pressurized air. Sometimes the pressurized air isn’t enough to stop the symptoms of a person’s sleep apnea. In this case, they may need a BiPAP machine.

Another reason you might want BiPAP over CPAP is for comfort. Some people find the continuous air from CPAP makes it hard to breathe, or it can make them feel claustrophobic. BiPAP’s two air pressures can feel more natural and comfortable. We have CPAP equipment for both at our CPAP store in North Carolina.

BiPAP vs APAP

BiPAP is the next level to CPAP, and APAP is the next level to BiPAP. APAP is automatic positive airway pressure, which adjusts the air pressure throughout the night, increasing when a sleep apnea event may happen and decreasing when the user is stable. It’s usually more comfortable and is better for dealing with complex sleep apnea such as REM-related sleep apnea.

The main reason BiPAP would be chosen over APAP would be due to cost and insurance. APAP is more expensive because it adapts air pressure throughout the night. You would only need APAP if BiPAP didn’t alleviate symptoms or if you wanted something more comfortable.

Benefits of Using BiPAP Machine

BiPAP machines share the same benefits as CPAP and APAP. It alleviates the symptoms of sleep apnea. Here are some benefits of using BiPAP:

  • Decreased chance of strokes
  • Decreased likelihood of heart disease
  • Reduced chance of type 2 diabetes
  • Better sleep quality
  • Better alertness
  • Improved mood and emotions
  • Lower health expenses

There are more benefits, but elaborating on the last point, sleep apnea and other sleep-breathing disorders take a significant toll on physical and mental health. Sleep is the time for our body to recover, but without it, we can feel weak, less motivated, and more irritable.

The negatives of lousy sleep could go on forever, and all of these things put people at risk of diseases and injuries. Taking care of sleep apnea by using a PAP machine will save your health in the long run, thus saving you money.

How Can You Get A BiPAP?

The FDA reclassified PAP machines from class 3 medical equipment to class 2, meaning that you need a formal prescription from a doctor to buy a BiPAP or any other PAP device. Why? The machine requires customization before use for safety reasons. Without a doctor’s exam, it’s likely the equipment won’t improve symptoms; in some cases, symptoms can worsen.

Luckily our clinic is open in Cary, NC, for appointments. Schedule an appointment, and we’ll help you discover if you have sleep apnea and get you the PAP equipment you need. Book a telehealth appointment if you’re not in Cary. If you already have your prescription visit our store in North Carolina for all you CPAP and BIPAP needs!

CPAP Machines

CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure. A CPAP machine provides consistent air pressure to help maintain a constant open airway.

BiPAP Machines

BiPAP alternates between two different levels of applied positive airway pressure by using non-invasive, pressurized ventilation on a time or flow basis.

APAP Machines

Automatic positive airflow pressure – or APAP – adjusts to your breathing patterns periodically using automation, versus CPAP which delivers air at one level continuously.

Do you need a new CPAP mask? We can help you choose the best options. We have a variety of face, nose, chin, nasal pillow, and mask weight options.

ASV Machines

ASV stands for adaptive servo-ventilation. These sophisticated machines can automatically match your breathing patterns and deliver customized air pressure levels.
