ASV Machines

Serving the greater Raleigh area

Sleep apnea affects over 10% of the US population. It causes events that halt a person’s breathing or wake them up multiple times in a night. The degradation of sleep takes little time to show results. If you’ve ever had a bad sleep, you know you feel it that morning and possibly through the whole day.

It’s a problem, but there is a solution. A common treatment for sleep apnea and other poor sleep conditions is PAP or positive airway pressure therapy. PAP comes in many forms, such as CPAP, BIPAP, and APAP, but have you heard of ASV devices? ASV is a sophisticated device that relieves symptoms of OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) and CSA (central sleep apnea).

What is an ASV machine?

ASV stands for Adaptive Servo Ventilation. As the name suggests, an ASV machine observes the user’s breath and adapts a custom air pressure to stop sleep apnea events. The air pressure is dynamically adjusted according to the user’s breathing.

While ASV adjusts to whatever the user needs, CPAP only has one set level of pressure, which is the same for breathing in and out. BiPAP has two positive airway pressures for breathing in and out. It may seem better than other PAP devices, but each has a use.

Who Needs Adaptive Servo Ventilation?

ASV suits people that suffer from OSA and CSA. OSA is when the airway shrinks or becomes completely blocked for a short or long period. Depending on the person, these episodes can be as long as 10 seconds. CSA is where a person’s brain doesn’t signal respiratory muscles to breathe.

Determining if you suffer from sleep apnea can be hard, but it’s easier if there’s someone to monitor your sleep. We have a sleep center in Cary NC which will help our doctor diagnose and treat your sleep apnea. If you can’t come to have your sleep monitored, ask your partner these questions:

  • Do I snore loudly?
  • Do I wake up in the night gasping for air or choking?
  • Have I had any sleep apnea episodes?

If you answer yes to one of these questions, you could have sleep apnea. Without a partner to monitor your sleep, you should look out for signs of excessive sleepiness, headaches in the morning, brain fog, and awakening with a dry mouth.

Benefits of ASV Ventilation

The main benefits of ASV machines directly decrease symptoms of sleep apnea. By using an ASV, you could:

  • Decrease the chance of heart disease
  • Lower chances of strokes
  • Prevent diabetes
  • Have better daytime alertness and focus
  • Feel well rested
  • Stop snoring
  • And more

The main benefit is that your body can adequately rest, recovering from the emotional and physical stresses of the day.

Is an ASV Device BiPAP or CPAP?

ASV is neither BiPAP nor CPAP. It’s an adaptive ventilation system that adjusts the amount of air pressure automatically. BiPAP has only two positive airway pressures. One is for breathing in, and the other is for breathing out. CPAP has one airway pressure that never changes.

It’s possible our doctor will recommend ASV for OSA or CSA, but they may recommend starting on BiPAP instead. ASV devices are more expensive than CPAP and BiPAP, so the price is a factor in what device you will use. After all, if BiPAP solves the problem, then there’s no need to go up a level to ASV.

What Are The Best ASV Settings?

ASV machines have many settings to give the patient a great night’s sleep. It may be enticing to finick with the settings, but we’d recommend that you listen to our doctor’s diagnosis and treatment plan. Please contact us if you ever need help getting more comfortable with your equipment. Our sleep specialists will be more than happy to help!

CPAP MACHINES

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines provide constant air pressure, which helps you maintain an open airway and improves your sleep.

BiPAP Machines

BiPAP pivots between two levels of applied positive airway pressure using non-invasive mechanized, pressurized ventilation on a time-flow basis.

APAP Machines

Automatic positive airflow pressure (APAP) automatically adjusts to your breathing patterns periodically versus the continuous flow of CPAP.

CPAP Masks
