Sleep is essential for a good day, a good week, and a good life. It’s the only time our bodies get to physically and mentally rest. Everyone knows how important it is, yet it needs to be prioritized more. According to the National Sleep Foundation, “35% of all adults in the U.S. report sleeping for less than seven hours per night on average.”
It’s even worse for people that suffer from sleep apnea. While they may get 8 hours of ‘sleep,’ their ‘sleep’ is worse because of the micro-events during the night where they stop breathing. People with moderate sleep apnea average 15 to 29 events per hour, meaning they have about 120 to 232 times when they stop breathing. These micro-events affect your ability to sleep tremendously, and it can cause poor sleep, which is already bad, but it can also contribute to Type 2 Diabetes, strokes, heart attacks. In general, it can shorten a person’s lifespan.
Sleep apnea affects about 6% of people in the U.S. or about 20 million people. The number is likely higher, but some of the symptoms can only be detected by someone else in the room.
An APAP machine is a solution to sleep apnea, but you need a prescription to buy one. Book an appointment with us if you believe you suffer from sleep apnea. We also provide Telehealth appointments, especially for the initial screening.
APAP stands for automatic positive airway pressure. It’s one of the three positive airway therapies. PAP machines deliver pressurized air to the user to keep them from having sleep apnea events.
CPAP and BIPAP, the other PAP machines, have constant pressurized air, but APAP’s air pressure changes to meet the user’s needs, which change throughout the night. It adjusts by checking the resistance in your breath, decreasing the pressurized air when you’re stable, and increasing when it senses a sleep apnea event coming.
Everyone’s air needs change throughout the night, but the changes can be more drastic in people with complex sleep apnea. Examples of complex sleep apnea are REM-related apnea or positional apnea. APAP may also be a better fit for people that can’t get used to CPAP machines.
You’ll find that APAP machines often cost more than CPAP. APAP is a more sophisticated machine than CPAP. APAP has to adjust to the user’s needs by detecting resistance, while CPAP continuously provides the same amount of pressurized air.
APAP will benefit anyone using CPAP, but not all APAP users will benefit from CPAP.
APAP has the general benefits of PAP machines which includes:
In general, using APAP will give you the benefits of good sleep. You’ll be less tired, which will help your body recover physically and mentally.
The FDA reclassified PAP machines from class 3 medical equipment to class 2, meaning that you need a formal prescription from a doctor to buy an APAP or any other PAP device. We ensure the equipment fits the user’s needs for safety reasons. Without a doctor’s exam, likely, the equipment won’t improve symptoms, and in some cases, symptoms can worsen.
Luckily our clinic is open in Cary, NC, for appointments. Schedule an appointment, and we’ll help you discover if you have sleep apnea and get you the PAP equipment you need. I’ve been a patient at Parkway SleepHealth for the past 4 years and my opinion is still the same as it was when I first allowed them to care of my sleep needs. Very professional, organized, outgoing, personable, very approachable, and definitely make you feel as though you are the priority. This was my first choice and my last choice. They are the best!
Excellent experience. They are willing to spend time with you on the phone and at the appointment to really go through everything. They checked my insurance to let me know what would be covered before my appointment. In terms of the equipment, they went through it thoroughly and answered all of my questions. Amazing customer service.
